One of the reasons I love Gymbox so much is the way the VPTs (Very Personal Trainers) instruct you with technique. In these last two sessions my trainer, Richie Byrne, with an Irish accent thicker than Katie Price (if that were possible) advised me, when we were perfecting the Romanian deadlift, to: “Stick your bum out like you’re being shagged.” Amazingly, it worked. Nailed it. Although it does conjure up some rather fruity visuals at 8.30am.
Alongside the deadlift – I am now up to lifting 40 kilos, which isn’t bad considering I’m training with an irritating arm nerve issue – over the last two weeks we’ve been working on the horizontal back extension, kneeling hamstring curls, Swiss ball hamstring curls and a bit of prowler-pushing and running at the end. Although it all feels hideous at the time – particularly the Swiss ball hamstring curls, it makes me feel sick and want to cry at the same time – the ensuing pain the next day is definitely diminishing and my body is definitely getting stronger. I also have to add that I cycle 9 miles into Holborn before I even start my training. So there.
Richie doesn’t cut me any slack. He’s firm but friendly, it always helps to build a rapport with someone you’re training with. It’s a very personal experience, and means a lot both emotionally and physically, so having someone on your side helps keep you focussed, and makes the experience less terrifying.
The good news? My weight is going down and I’m feeling leaner. Although, I have to admit I slipped last night after couple of vodkas and inhaled a pizza. I couldn’t help it. Sorry MyFitnessPal, please forgive me (it was pretty furious with me I can tell you).
So I have one more week left until I go to Ibiza. The aim is to lose two more kilos. A couple more sessions with Richie next week. I wonder what world of pain he has in store for me this time… But you know what? Bring it!
